Some brokers say the risks are overdone yet caution appears to be creeping in just ahead of the vote. Here are some views:

"The Catalan story confounds and worries us," said Swissquote analysts. "Euro speculators will want to close out their positions ahead of Sunday's proposed independence referendum in what still is Spain's Catalonia. All things are possible: a win for 'Catalexit' or even a shutdown of voting by angry officials in Madrid… olé! Markets are not pricing in any risk for Sunday"

"Investors will monitor the number of votes cast and the proportion in favor of independence in Sunday's attempted Catalonian vote. If both numbers are high, investor uncertainty about Spain and Europe may increase," said UBS in a morning note.
